Not much is known about his early life and background. According to popular belief, Surdas was born blind, but he possessed an extraordinary spiritual insight and poetic talent. From an early age, Surdas showed a deep inclination towards devotional practices and the worship of Lord Krishna. Despite his blindness, he displayed an innate ability to compose devotional poetry that stirred the hearts of the masses.

His poetry was primarily composed in Braj Bhasha, a dialect of Hindi spoken in the region. Surdas' devotion and poetic genius attracted the attention of Vallabhacharya, the founder of the Pushti Marg sect, who became his spiritual guide. Under Vallabhacharya's guidance, Surdas deepened his spiritual practice and continued to compose exquisite poetry dedicated to Lord Krishna.

Surdas' most celebrated work is the "Sursagar," a collection of devotional songs and hymns dedicated to Lord Krishna's divine leelas pastimes. He called his parents through a disciple and handed over all the property and wealth to them, leaving with just his clothes. He had set out to sing the glory of God. Every Night Bhajans and prayers began there.

People Started Coming from afar in here as well. The fame of Sur Swami ji spread, and Gau Ghat became a pilgrimage site. Sur Swami ji learned that Shri Vallabhacharya had arrived. Who had defeated the great proponents of Maya. Sur Swami ji sang. Do not cry over your sorrows; God will not be pleased. Sing the praises of His divine play and sing of His glory; only then will God be pleased.

He presented all his servants and made them disciples of Shri Mahaprabhuji. Then he went to Gopalpur, had the darshan of Shrinathji, and began singing the topmost of Pad before Prabhu Shreenathji. Shreeji was very pleased with Surdas ji poems hymns. He lived a life as one of the closest Krishna Sakha. Even s of infact pads were created by Shri Krishna in the name of Surdasji.

He was so graced that whatever color of clothes or Shringars were offered to Shri Navneet Priyaji, he would sing Pad matching exactly to those colors. The following day, no clothes were offered to Prabhu, and Surdasji was unaware of this. Then Surdasji replied. This means If I see any difference between them then only I could sing differently.

Younger one Shri Chaturbhujdasji asked many questions to Surdasji to learn something from them. And Surdasji Answered in form of Kirtans. This language is linked to the Braj region, where Krishna is said to have spent his childhood. The hagiographer Nabha Dass , in his Bhaktamal , praised Surdas for his poetic skill, especially in depicting "Hari's playful acts", a reference to Krishna's divine activities.

Surdas also composed poems about Ram and Sita but primarily focused on Krishna's life and deeds. Surdas's poetry was written in a dialect of Hindi called Braj Bhasha , until then considered to be a very plebeian language, as the prevalent literary languages were either Persian or Sanskrit. His work raised the status of the Braj Bhasha from a crude language to that of a literary one.

Surdas's poems are collectively known as the Sursagar or "Ocean of Sur" due to a large volume of poems attributed to his name. The traditional format of the Sursagar is divided into twelve parts, similar to the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavata Purana. Just as the Bhagavata Purana describes the life and actions of Krishna , the Sursagar also takes on a similar feat with a majority of its poems dedicated to Krishna.

Many of the poems found in Sursagar are pads, containing six to ten rhymed verses. Other subject matter covered include Rama and Sita , Vishnu , Shiva , heroes within Hinduism like Gajendra and King Bali , and the poet's spiritual struggles.
