Shiraz thobani biography of michael
Thobani has identified three rather disturbing processes that require further reflection. Firstly, the religious tradition of Islam is being divorced from the historical, cultural and political contexts in which it has developed, and, arguably, to which it has adapted, in both state-run and Muslim schools. Without an understanding of the multi-faceted contexts in which Islam has developed much religious diversity, students will be ill-prepared to relate to Muslims they encounter in daily life in an increasingly globalised world.
Secondly, an essentialised version of Islam is presented to students within both types of schools. Teachers in the Muslim schools similarly focused on those texts and teachings which were considered to be universal. They hoped to recreate an integrated Islam within Britain, one in which students belonged to the global Muslim community, the umma, rather than culturally-based national or ethnic identities.
Thobani stops short of suggesting how these findings might be addressed through curriculum but he makes a clear argument for the need of further reflection on how Islam, and indeed other religious traditions, are included in the state curriculum. The intended audience for this text was educators, policy makers and educational specialists interested in how symbolic categories of Islam, Muslim, Christian and British are formulated and transmitted through educational practices.
It is an accessible text and would be of interest also to a general readership interested in how Islam is taught globally, how it is incorporated into British national curricula and how teachers communicate these symbolic categories to their students. It is well referenced and contains a glossary of Muslim terminology to facilitate understanding of the religious concepts that are discussed.
Wertz, K. Charmaz, L. McMullen, R. Josselson and E. ISBN pbk This book contributes to the emerging debates in this area by focusing on the historical background and contemporary context of five major approaches to qualitative analysis: phenomenological psychology, grounded theory, discourse analysis, narrative research, and intuitive inquiry.
Grounded in case materials, the book uses concrete demonstrations and comparisons of these approaches as a foundation for understanding and employing the procedures and techniques used in the five specific approaches p. To do this the authors, all of whom are leading scholars in the field of qualitative research analysis, use a unique approach in writing this book.
The resulting analyses demonstrate what each approach looks like in practice. Muslims, schooling and the limits of religious identity Daniel Moulin. In the aftermath of September 11 , the teaching of Islam has assumed geopolitical significance, coming under close scrutiny internationally. Much of this attention has been directed at madrasas in Muslim countries, yet Islam in schooling contexts in the West has remained a blind-spot. In the UK, heightened anxieties about home-grown terrorists point to the need for a better understanding of Islam in both state and faith schools.
Shiraz Thobani explores the role played by national and local policies and pedagogic practices in the production of school-based Islam in a secular, liberal context and makes an important contribution to the sociology of the curriculum and the study of religious education.
